One-off pieces

Katrin’s one-off pieces are in-depth explorations of a particular material aspect, a form, or a more abstract theme. They are an opportunity to test and develop ideas in a free, playful way. Over time they result in series, such as the collection pictured above.

Reoccurring inspirations of the last few years were the forms of medieval and West African household vessels, philosophical considerations around ‘impurity’, ‘boundaries’ and ‘inclusion’ and the relationship of different clay bodies with found, non-ceramic materials such as beach wood, copper wire and pebbles.

Tableware collections and one-off pieces are made in tandem and often inform each other aesthetically as well as materially; they often end up being different manifestations of similar thought processes and themes.

Though they sometimes seem less obviously utilitarian and perhaps more decorative than the tableware items, Katrin’s one-off pieces are still finished to the highest craft standard. If so desired, they can still be used on the table or in the kitchen.
